Canada Research Chair in Bioengineering and Bio-nanotechnology. Biosensors and nanomachines are being created by employing biopolymer scaffolds for use in medicine (diagnostics, smart drug delivery), environmental science (detection and elimination of contaminants/pathogens), and industrial synthesis (smart catalysts, green chemistry). Approaches for diagnosing/treating diseases, and detecting/eliminating pollutants are generally expensive, and require highly qualified personnel. Nature has found many solutions to these kinds of problems by evolving molecular machines that perform relevant tasks efficiently using minimal energy and generating environmentally benign waste products. Inspired by Nature, my laboratory is developing similar artificial molecular machines for inexpensive biotechnologies aimed at improving global health and environmental issues.  Combining classical tools in organic chemistry with modern techniques for biochemistry, molecular biology and electrochemistry, my laboratory seeks to prepare nanodevices with high sensitivity and tunable properties for diagnosing, catalyzing or performing other activities in various media.
